First held in 1922 and run at the Moonee Valley race course each year in October, The Cox Plate is considered by many Australian racing purists, to be Australia’s premier thoroughbred horse race. The race is named after the Moonee Valley Racing Clubs founder W.S. Cox.

The race is run on the flat over 2,040 metres and is a Weight for Age race open to three-year-olds and older and boosts the richest prize money for a weight for age race in Australia which is over 3 million dollars. The race is regarded highly because of the endurance and speed required by the horses to win this prestigious event. The WS Cox plate is a group one race and a feature event of the Victorian Spring carnival.

The race is regarded so highly that in 1999 it was included in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship.

FIRST FOUR: to pick the horses that finish in the first four in the correct order.

During the Spring carnival Australians flock to Spring Carnival to attend great events such as the cox plate, the Derby, the Oaks and the Melbourne Cup. These events are a social day featuring fashion on the fields and many people wager on the outcome of these races.
